The Problems with Foam Filled Telehandler Tires

Foam Filled telehandler tires are the norm in the construction industry. However solid telehandler tires are becoming more and more popular, and there are a few reasons for this.

Easily Damaged

Foam-filled telehandler tires are susceptible to damage and often require operators to change their tires before the tread is worn. Sidewall damage is the most common form of damage that caused the tire to be lopsided, affecting the ride and safety of the machine when carrying loads. Foam can get squeezed out through the damaged wall creating a deformed tire shape. This type of damage causes frequent downtime and more frequent tire replacement costs that most operators and machine owners don’t want to deal with.

Solid telehandler tires don’t have this issue. A solid telehandler tire is built with slid rubber with apertures that allow the tire to compress under a load. These tires are puncture-proof and flat-proof. Solid telehandler tires are less likely to be damaged beyond usability which makes them more reliable on a job site. This is highly important for a purchaser as they can accurately calculate the cost/hr of a machine.

Safety and Predictable Load Curves

Foam-filled tires don’t compress easily or uniformly due to their load curve. When carrying a heavy load or extending the arms of a machine with a heavy load, the operator can’t accurately predict how a tire will react. The EWRS-TH Series solid telehandler tire has a linear load curve from 1lb to 1800lb. This is considerably safer and easier for the operator of a telehandler tire because it eliminates the guesswork of how far you can extend a load.

Construction sites are subjected to many regulations including rules about how much damage a tire can have before they need to be replaced. Because foam-filled telehandler tires develop damage quickly, Solid tires have become more desirable. The EWRS-TH Series solid telehandler tires are built to withstand chunking damage, deep cuts, and other forms of damage to make sure you can stay up and running.

Lack of Serviceability

When it comes to serviceability in a foam-filled telehandler tire, the is none. If a tire gets damaged, you have to wait for a service tire to either come and repair the tire or you need to cut the tire off of the rim. This takes time, specialized equipment, and technicians. This causes lengthy downtime and expensive labor costs.

The EWRS-TH Series solid telehandler tires are easily serviceable, eliminating downtime and Labor costs due to damaged tires. Evolution Wheel was able to do this by making a segmented tire. The EWRS-TH Series is composed of 17 segments that attach to the high-strength steel rim with a series of nuts and bolts. The only tool you will need is a wrench and a few minutes. With a spare segment, an operator can remove a damaged segment and attach the new one so they can get going again.

When it comes time to replace the rubber, Evolution Wheel offers a retread kit that includes an all-new set of rubber segments. The operator is able to easily remove the worn rubber segments and replace them with the new ones and get back up and running quickly. No special equipment or technicians.
