What Kind of Telehandler Tires do you Need?

Determining what type of telehandler tires you need can be difficult. Here’s an introduction to the types of telehandler tires and what they are commonly used for.

Pneumatic Telehandler Tires

Pneumatic telehandler tires are the cheapest option on the market. Like your normal car tires, they are filled with air. Being filled with compressed air allows the tire to flex and act as shock absorption. Providing a very comfortable ride for the operator.

These tires are susceptible to punctures from debris and nails. Which is where most telehandlers operate in. A flat tire is dangerous when carrying heavy loads with extended arms. For this reason, telehandler tires have been restricted to using puncture and flat-proof tires on many job sites.

Foam-Filled Telehandler Tires

Foam-filled telehandler tires are pneumatic tires filled with foam rather than air. This allows them to be puncture resistant and safer on a construction job site. The foam adds weight to the tire providing more traction but sacrifices floatation.

However, foam-filled telehandler tires do not flex as a pneumatic tire would. The foam within the tire is stiff, resulting in a rougher ride for the operator. They also are susceptible to sidewall damage. When sidewall damage gets severe enough, the foam gets squeezed out the side of the tire. The hobbled tire provides an uneven ride which is dangerous when carrying heavy loads.

Solid Telehandler Tires

A solid telehandler tire is the most expensive option often costing about twice as much as a foam-filled option. But, a solid tire will never go flat. These tires last up to 3 times the average life span of a foam-filled telehandler tire. They are becoming more and more common on job sites because of their longevity.

Because solid telehandler tires don’t use air and foam, they don’t have a problem with excess bouncing. The stability this offers to operators makes them popular as it is safer on the job site.

The EWRS-TH Series

The EWRS-TH Series solid telehandler tires are also segmented. This gives the operator the ability to service the tire if a lug gets gouged or excessively damaged. If a segment gets damaged, the operator is able to replace that segment with a new one to avoid downtime. Downtime on any job adds unnecessary costs that no one wants. It also eliminates the cost of getting a service truck, or specialized tools and technicians.

The EWRS-TH Series also features specialized tread design and a linear load curve. The tires are offered in two tread patterns, the hard surface pattern and the all-terrain pattern. For construction applications, the hard surface tread pattern is your best bet. This pattern is designed specifically for comfortability and longevity on hard surfaces.

The hard surface pattern has a larger surface area designed to spread out the weight of the machine. This lessens the stress on the rubber allowing it to last longer on abrasive surfaces. They are also a perfect rolling circle, which provides a smooth ride over hard surfaces.

The all-terrain tread pattern is designed for traction in muddy applications. Telehandlers working in applications like the logging industry often need traction. The all-terrain pattern has large lugs with large void spaces to paddle through the mud.

The EWRS-TH Series solid telehandler tires are designed for the toughest conditions. Whether it's on hard surfaces or out in the mud. Evolution Wheel has you covered.
